Important Information and questions

What is the Difference between Balance and Gait Disorders?

Balance and Gait Disorders are commonly related to each other, but there are some differences among them. Balance disorders can be physical and mental. That happens because your brain sometimes might think that you are in movement even when you are not. Some of the facts which have physical consequences on your balance, can be changes to your joint strength, movement and the ability to sense where your joints are in space.

On the other side, gait disorders might cause some abnormal movements, such as in the way you walk or run. Those abnormalities can be exaggerated through the length of life.

Balance and Gait Disorders are a part of the functional problems family. Those problems can interfere with your positional awareness, your way of walking or running as well as the ability you have of standing on your own feet.

What Caused the Development of my Balance or Gait Disorder?

There exist a lot of different factors which might cause the development of balance and gait disorders. Those conditions can develop from many different fundamental conditions.

Many balance disorders are related to vestibular system issues. The vestibular system is a delicate system which is responsible for the information that our brain collects, such as movement, head position and spatial orientation. Moreover, this system is responsible for some motor functions which allow us to keep our balance, maintain posture or even stabilize our head or body during any movement. The vestibular system is also responsible for our proprioception (sense of position of our head or body).

Some of the most usual vestibular conditions which result in some kinds of balance disorders, include:

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)

It is one of the most usual causes of vertigo. This happens when calcium debris is separated in the inner ear. In this case, it causes some balance issues.

Neurological Issues

Some of those issues include Parkinson’s disease, a stroke or even a brain injury. Any kind of thing which can affect your neurological system, can at the same time, impact your balance.

Injury or Ailment

Your brain and your nervous system can work in harmony with each other, at the moment of speaking. But, a sudden injury, a disease or another ailment which causes any sort of muscle weakness, might interfere with your balance and make it difficult for you to stand up and keep yourself in the right position.
