What is Hip pain?

Hip pain is one of the most painful sufferings that each one of us can experience at some point in our lives. When we talk about it, we mean any pain in or around the hip joint. It can occur in all genders and at all ages. However, according to studies, the most prone to it are women and older people. Other factors that also affect this condition are the body type, the individual’s sports activities, as well as any other diseases.

Once the cause of the hip pain has been identified, your physical therapist will suggest the appropriate treatment.

For minor injuries and exercise-related pain, you usually do not need treatment and your hip will soon return to its normal condition.

However, for more serious conditions, such as arthritis, fractures and necrosis, the symptoms will get worse until you get treatment. Consult your doctor to build the optimal treatment plan.

Important Information and questions

Hip pain can be caused by a hernia or an inguinal hernia. Pregnant women are particularly prone to this injury, due to the great pressure that their abdominal wall receives.

6. Osteoporosis.

Also prone are people with osteoporosis, who, due to their weak bones, may experience fractures even during their simple daily activities.

** Gynecological issues.

In women, hip pain may be a symptom of a gynecological issue, such as endometriosis.

For pain that may not be related to a condition such as arthritis, your doctor will ask you a variety of questions, including:

  • Does the pain get worse at some point during the day?
  • Does pain affect the ability to walk?
  • When did the symptoms first appear?

You may need to walk to have the doctor observe the movement of the joint. He will measure the movement in the normal and the affected hip and will compare the two measurements.

To diagnose arthritis, your doctor will order blood, urine, and synovial fluid tests. In addition, he will ask for imaging techniques, such as:

  • X-ray.
  • Computed tomography.
  • Magnetic resonance.
  • Ultrasound.
  • Imaging tests will provide detailed images of bone, cartilage and other tissues.

The treatment plan depends on the cause of the pain and can be conservative or surgical. Conservative treatment of hip pain generally includes:

  • Rest, with or without complete immobilization.
  • Lying down on the healthy side.
  • Painkillers and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • Physiotherapy and strengthening exercises.
  • Antibiotics when needed.
  • Cartilage regeneration drugs in osteoarthritis.

Surgery is necessary for many of the cases that cause hip pain. Especially in the case of a fracture, surgery should be done as soon as possible to prevent complications, such as pulmonary embolism, which can be fatal. In most cases of surgery, total hip arthroplasty is performed (i.e., replacement of the joint with an artificial one). As a precaution, to avoid hip pain and the conditions that cause them, it is recommended:

  • Weight loss in overweight and obese.
  • Physical exercise – muscle strengthening program.
  • Avoid activities that strain the hip joint (e.g., running on uneven ground).
  • Prevention of osteoporosis.
  • Reducing the risk of falls in the elderly (e.g., correction of vision problems, non-slipping shoes, ergonomics, 24-hour supervision-care).

Contact your physical therapist if you have hip pain which lasts for more than a few days. He will suggest ways to manage the pain and deal with the situation.

Also, seek immediate care if your hip appears deformed or swollen or if you experience severe pain.

You should see your physical therapist, if you have the following signs:

  • You are unable to walk comfortably on the affected side of your body.
  • Your hip pain occurs at night, or while you are resting.
  • You are unable to bend the hip.
  • There is swelling of the hip or thigh area.
  • There are signs of an infection, including fever, redness, and warmth.
  • You experience any other unusual symptoms.

Who says you are obligated to live with hip pain and experience a difficult lifestyle? FisioCenter is here to help you solve your hip pain problem. Physical therapy is the right solution in order to transform your problem and stop suffering. We can help you have the right examination and, in the end, treat your hip pain.

The aim of physical therapy is to strengthen your muscles and increase your flexibility while maintaining the range of motion of your joints as well as decrease any created inflammation. At FisioCenter you will have the most appropriate approach and treatment and this is because we create the best customized programs suitable for your personal needs.

Usually, it is recommended to avoid activities such as running, aerobic exercise and sports that burden the hip. Walking, swimming and cycling are more acceptable activities after hip arthroplasty.
