PNF proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation Proprioceptive – means receiving stimulations inside the tissue. Neuromuscular- Penetration into muscles and nerves. Facilitation- the result that is created in the nerve fibers by the passage of impulses.
PNF is a stretching technique used to increase ROM and flexibility. PNF increases ROM by lengthening muscles and increasing neuromuscular efficiency. The PNF technique also combines movements in all three planes of motion. With a specific sequence of movements, PNF stimulates muscles and neurological functions in patients with
1. partial damage of peripheral nerves,
2. muscle atrophy
3. weakness of the muscles of the extremities.
4. inability to relax muscles
5. rigidity, spasticity
Purpose:
– Increase muscle flexibility
– Increase the ability of the neuromuscular system to coordinate movements.
-To increase articular ROM.
– By increasing the stability of the pelvis, it indirectly helps to increase the mobility of the lower limbs.
-Strengthens the muscles.
The duration of the rehabilitation sessions is 20 to 30, starting from 2 sessions per week, and based on the consistency of the therapy, its continuation is decided.

1.Resistance-Resistance set by
the physiotherapist in the opposite direction of movement should be optimal and not unbearable for the patient.
2.Stretching-Extending and Relaxing the muscles until the goal of the therapy is fulfilled.
3. Manual Contact – Direct contact stimulates the muscles, gives the patient comfort and safety in performing the movement.
4. Verbal commands – communicating with the patient when and how to do the movement (start, action and end) The high tone of the voice gives an indication when muscle contraction is necessary. The low tone indicates an accomplished goal and that the patient can relax.
5. Body positioning and biomechanics – the body must be positioned in such a line that the movement is performed without difficulty and without tiring the patient and is performed correctly.
6. Timing-Coordination and the sequences in which the performance of the movement is divided and the time in which it should be performed helps the rehabilitation to be as efficient as possible.
