What is Dizziness and Vertigo Physiotherapy?

The term dizziness can refer to a number of symptoms that a patient can have, such as headache, nausea, fainting, dizziness and so on. Dizziness is an important cause that limits the functionality of a person. This kind of disease reduces the person’s performance – in his home, his family, his other obligations, as well as his hobbies and so on.

Dizziness can also create a false sense that you or the things that surround you, are spinning or moving. This kind of dizziness symptom is called vertigo. Vertigo is usually caused by an inner ear problem. The patient is almost always aware that these symptoms are false and most of the time, although they are very annoying, they are not dangerous.

Dizziness and vertigo are usually due to simple causes (for example, staying in the sun, a boat trip) or an ear disease. However, in rare cases the cause is neurological and then there are other symptoms such as difficulty speaking, diplopia, numbness in the extremities and so on.

Important Information and questions

The causes of Dizziness vary:

  • It might be due to neuromusculoskeletal problems of the neck or head, or the rest of the human body.
  • It can also be affected or caused by visceral causes, as a primary or secondary symptom, such as Circulatory Disorders or the Autonomic Nervous System for a variety of reasons. In such cases, we might be referring to Sweating or even Fainting.

The causes of Vertigo:

There are many causes that can lead to vertigo-instability. Below, we will give an account of some of them:

Atrial neuronitis

It is characterized by sudden onset and severe symptoms. It is defined by intense dizziness and vomiting, invades abruptly and lasts from a few days to three weeks. Any movement of the head aggravates the symptoms at first and therefore the patient avoids any movement.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo

Characteristic of this disease is the induction of the symptoms of vertigo, when the patient lies supine with his head facing sideways, on the side of the patient’s labyrinth. It usually lasts a few seconds, although the feeling of dizziness may persist for hours.

Meniere’s disease.

It is a progressive condition, which can combine dizziness with hearing loss and tinnitus (buzzing), these can last from 20 minutes to 24 hours. The pathology of the disease is due to the increased pressure of the endometrium in the inner ear.

Labyrinthitis

It is an inflammation of the labyrinth, which can be due to the action of germs and which causes very strong symptoms with problems with both hearing and balance. It is a serious condition and needs early diagnosis and treatment.

Auditory neuroma

It is a benign tumor that grows slowly at a slow rate, causing unilateral hearing loss, tinnitus and dizziness. The vertigo is transient and lasts from 30 minutes to a few weeks. However, hearing loss is permanent and progressively worsens. It is therefore important that the diagnosis is made in time.
