In fibromyalgia patients have diffuse and, often, severe pain throughout the body. Patients typically report that they feel “like their skin hurts”. In addition, they suffer from headaches, insomnia and sleep disturbances (restless legs syndrome), intestinal and stomach problems. Almost all of their tests are negative, which is why they often hear doctors talk to them about a “psychological problem”.
Indeed, in the history of many patients with fibromyalgia, there is an episode, which caused intense mental stress (loss of a loved one, divorce, dismissal, etc.) and is temporarily associated with the onset of fibromyalgia symptoms, but the cause of fibromyalgia is not “psychological” or “mental”.

The symptoms of fibromyalgia are developed slowly, in a period of weeks or months. The pattern of development of symptoms varies from person to person and can be:
For the diagnosis of fibromyalgia, it is not necessary an imaging examination or any other specified test. Most of the time, the medical history of the patient is more than enough.
The diagnosing examinations such as X-rays, CT scans and MRI scans have no diagnosing value, but they can contribute to the vicious circle of misinformation. Therefore, it is not necessary to bother yourself with unnecessary examinations.
This happens for the reason that your doctor or physical therapist can focus on one finding, such as for example an intervertebral disc herniation, which might not have any relation with the mechanism that refers to the pain of the patient.
The causes of fibromyalgia are unknown, yet. There are probably several factors that can be blamed. It could be a trauma or emotional stress or even an illness (combined with rheumatoid arthritis or other illnesses). Several researchers suggest a genetic cause due to finding people with fibromyalgia in a family.
However, the majority of researchers agree that there is a disturbance in the transmission of nerve impulses to the central nervous system. The result is that those people feel a more intense pain and suffer more often than other people (hyperalgesia). There have been found elevated levels of stimulant neurotransmitters (such as substance P, cytokines, etc.) as well as decreased levels of suppressive neurotransmitters (such as serotonin, endorphins, etc.).
Available research data indicate a disturbance in the “interpretation” of signals in the central nervous system that causes a disturbed sensation of pain.
There is no specific treatment for fibromyalgia. The treatment is multifaceted and depends on the type of symptoms that each patient presents individually. Except of the customized treatment plan and the adherence to personalized diet and daily routine programs which normalize the sensation of pain, the general measures that patients must follow are:
Try to manage your stress with techniques such as breathing exercises, meditation, religious activities, and volunteering.
Adopt good sleeping habits and routine, such as going to bed and getting up at the same time each day, getting adequate darkening and no noise in the bedroom. Adequate rest contributes to the correct perception of pain.
Exercise can increase the severity of your symptoms at first. However, gentle exercising when made gradually and systematically reduces the intensity of the symptoms. Walking and swimming are the best forms of exercise in the case of fibromyalgia.
Limit your intake of alcohol and caffeine, sweets, animal fats, and fast-food. Follow the personalized nutritional program for the restoration of the deficiencies of vitamins, minerals and trace elements that have been given to you after your special pathological examination.

Although painful as a condition, fibromyalgia does not cause damage to the tissues and organs of the body. Not only is this condition not fatal, but there is no evidence which links it to any effects on your child’s or even your survival expectancy.
This condition can occur individually, but more often coexists with other conditions that have now been shown to have similar underlying pathophysiology (e.g., irritable bowel syndrome, interstitial cystitis, and tension headache) or as comorbidity in people with persistent peripheral damage or inflammation (e.g., autoimmune disorders and osteoarthritis).
