What is Sciatica & Sciatic Nerve Pain ?

Sciatica is a condition connected with the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back, down the back of each leg to the feet, and when there are problems with that sciatic nerve it starts causing unbearable pain. Normally sciatica affects one side of the lower body and it spreads the pain from the lower back all the way through the back of the thigh and through the leg. Be aware that the pain could also spread to your foot or toes, depending on the part that the sciatic nerve is affected. Although for some people it is severe and exhausting pain, for others it is rare and annoying.

As a condition, it has been shown to touch most people in their 30s or older. This happens as when people age they tend to do less activity or because of the fact that they age and their spine gets degenerated. Know that the sciatic nerve is the longest nerve you have in your body and the nerves that get pressed might be within the spinal canal, intervertebral foramen, or outside the vertebral column, in the pelvis, or buttocks. The moment that these nerves get compressed, it automatically activates the sciatic nerve and starts causing pain and many other symptoms down the leg on the way to the affected nerve.

Important Information and questions

Sciatica and back pain tend to begin the moment there is pressure or damage to your sciatic nerve. It is caused by numerous conditions, such as an injury or spinal or sciatic nerve tumors. It can cause unbearable pain, as this nerve controls the muscles of the back of the knee and lower leg. Some of the most common causes of sciatica are:

  • Spinal stenosis – Spinal stenosis can put pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots and aggravate them.
  • Osteoarthritis – As known, the facet joints of the spine are susceptible to osteoarthritis, which means when facet and joint bones and soft tissue are inflamed or aggravated, then it will affect the surrounding nerves.
  • A herniated disc – A herniated disc could happen when one or more discs get damaged and start protruding into the spinal canal.
  • Spinal tumors – Sometimes, you might have tumors growing inside or along the spinal cord or sciatic nerve and this could cause sciatica, as the pressure of the tumor puts pressure on the nerves.
  • Spondylolisthesis – Spondylolisthesis can happen when you have degenerative disk disorder, which means when one spinal bone is extending forward over another, then the extended spinal bone could pinch the nerves that affect your sciatic nerve.

The most ordinary symptom that sciatica causes is pain that extends down the lower spine and normally on one side of the body. Some of its other symptoms are:

  • Hip pain.
  • Continuous pain on the side of the rear.
  • Pain which makes it hard for you to stand up.
  • Burning or tingling down the leg.
  • Muscle weakness or numbness.
  • Unilateral pain.
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control.
  • Discomfort when sitting for a long time.

Being that sciatica is connected with a nerve in your body, it is very normal that it can also be treated with physiotherapy. A physiotherapist is meant to diagnose the underlying cause and develop a treatment plan which will benefit you for the rest of your life. Starting treating this problem with physiotherapy will help stretch your nerves and move freely. The most common treatment plans used are acupuncture, soft tissue, and joint mobilizations, as well as how to lessen the pain and suffering through advice and tips on how to put less pressure on the nerve and spine. The moment that your physiotherapist can understand your pain has been reduced, he or she will search for the management of the issue and a solution so it does not come back again. The best option would be a specialist exercising to mobilize the nerve and regain the strength in muscles that have been affected by pain. Another option is to mobilize techniques to spinal joints and discs to lose stiffness or restrictions. When the full treatment plan is finished, your physiotherapist will expect the symptoms to be gone and you to have gotten the knowledge and strategies on your mind to reduce the chance of it reappearing in your life.
